HeadlinesReturn to index of stories... |
Good Evening. I'm Allison McNair. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. We begin tonight with a summary of today's news. |
Bad AirReturn to index of stories... |
State health officals are warning people in southern New Hampshire to beware of unhealthy air tonight and tomorrow. It's a result of high ozone levels --- which are expected to be at their worst in the afternoon and early evening. Consequently, people should make efforts to avoid prolonged activity in areas south of the Lakes region. Signs of ozone exposure include coughing, shortness of breath and chest pain. And in an effort to prevent car exhaust from making the problem worse - all public transportation is free through tomorrow. |
Social SecurityReturn to index of stories... |
President Bush's plan to let workers invest a portion of their Social Security taxes in the stock market is getting mixed reviews. The commission on Social Security meets tomorrow. Some New Hampshire Democrats gathered in Concord today to criticize the idea. They say that Social Security is a safety-net and should not be connected to the volatile stock market. Supporters of Bush's plan say the system is in crisis and unless something is done - taxes will have to be raised, or benefits will have to be reduced. |
Judicial CommitteeReturn to index of stories... |
The legislature and the media are being criticized by two departing members of the Judicial Conduct Committee. David Hodges and John Newsom - who have resigned from the panel - called the media's coverage of recent ethical questions in the judiciary hysterical and out-of-control. And they said it was ironic that the New Hampshire legislature - which the two men say has one of the weakest conflict-of-interest laws in the country - was criticizing the court for having ethical conflicts. Hodges'and Newsoms' resignations come as the current committee is expected to be replaced by an independent conduct panel. |
drug kingpinReturn to index of stories... |
A Nashua man accused of being one of the biggest cocaine dealers in New Hampshire has been indicted under the state's drug kingpin law. 21-year-old Angel Roldan faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years in prison if convicted. Police believe Roldan was the head of a ring which brought cocaine, crack and "Ecstasy" from Massachusetts, selling it to people in Manchester and surrounding towns. |

Retired Colonel Harvey Barnum - who graduated from Saint Anselm's in 19-62 - will be deputy assistant Secretary of the Navy for reserve affairs. After finishing his education in New Hampshire, Barnum went into the Marines. He won the Medal of Honor for his service during the Vietnam War. |
